Concrete Boom Pumps Versus Concrete Line Pumps

When you’re in the market for concrete-pumping services and start doing some research, you’ll quickly come across the terms “concrete boom pumps” and “concrete line pumps” – but what is the difference between the two? In this blog entry, we’ll give a definition of each sort of concrete pump, list the various forms in which they are available, and also talk a little about the use of boom pumps versus that of line pumps.

What is a Concrete Boom Pump?

Also sometimes referred to as boom concrete pumps, these pumps utilise a long robotic arm – known as a boom – in order to deliver concrete easily to difficult locations. Further, they deliver concrete at a high volume and with less labour than other types. The boom of a concrete boom pump is operated by remote control.

What is a Concrete Line Pump?

Also sometimes referred to as line concrete pumps, these pumps utilise flexible hoses (in a range of lengths) to deliver concrete to exactly where it is required. Using hoses in this way, they demand more labour than boom pumps. They also pump at a lower volume.

How do Concrete Boom Pumps Vary?

At Callaghan Concrete Pumps, we can provide boom pumps in truck-mounted and stationary varieties. While truck-mounted concrete boom pumps obviously have the advantage of portability, stationary ones do offer the options of being either freestanding, jump-form mounted, floor-frame mounted or ballasted frame. Needless to say, there isn’t just one model of boom truck, either. These may differ in vehicle size, the supports (known as “outriggers”), the boom length and the way it unfolds.

How do Concrete Line Pumps Vary?

In much the same way as our concrete boom pumps, Callaghan’s line pumps come as truck-mounted and stationary. As well as these, we have trailer-mounted concrete line pumps, which also give some of the manoeuvrability of the truck-mounted sort.

Where Are Concrete Boom Pumps Used?

These are the best concrete pump for when you want to pump concrete at height and/or at a high volume, e.g. on the upper storeys of a high-rise building.

Where Are Concrete Line Pumps Used?

These are the best concrete pump for when you only want to pump a relatively modest amount of concrete horizontally, i.e. at ground level. So, where concrete boom pumps are often employed for large commercial projects, concrete line pumps are commonly the choice for smaller residential jobs. If you’re not trying to reach an out-of-the-way area and don’t need a high volume of concrete, a line pump’s hose will give you maximum flexibility.
